My mother went to the dentist this morning with an abscessed tooth on her upper jaw. He prescribed pain medicine and antibiotics and will be pulling the tooth later. Her face is very swollen and has only gotten worse today. The pain has now moved down to her lower jaw as well and she is very very sick – worse than before she went to the dentist. Is this normal?

You can actually take up to 5 200mg of Ibuprofen (a total of 1000mg; my neurologist prescribes this for me to take when I get migraines and I take it every few weeks with no problems.) Up to three non-prescription Tylenol. Of course, if taking any of these normally bother your stomach, be sure to take with food.
Drink cool/cold water. When your tooth is infected, heat makes it so awful..but cold brings relief. You can also try chewing on ice, I’m not sure how sensitive the tooth is right now.
If it gets REALLY bad, pull it yourself. Kidding..though I do know people who have pulled their own teeth due to horrible pain. (Including Amy Winehouse! Not that I know her, just OF her.)
I feel terrible for you. I have an abscessed tooth at the moment and am going in for a root canal tomorrow (which I am hella nervous about). I understand about the money thing. I’m going to be making payments and paying a SHITLOAD. Thank God I have a credit card to make the “down payment” or else I would just be getting it yanked.
As a final note: I’ve heard that clove oil helps with tooth pain. Putting a drop or two on the tooth allegedly clears up the pain. I’ve heard from many people that it works. Never tried personally. I use the mixture of 1000mg ibuprofen + cold water. Cold compresses are good too.
Good luck and I hope you get it taken care of soon.
