I have been being treated by my dentist for an abscessed tooth. I went in today to have it pulled and the infection is still there. I have taken Amoxicillin 500 mg for 16 days and rinsed twice daily with peroxide. Now he has prescribed Cephalexin 500 mg for 7days and rinse daily with warm salt water.
Does it normally take this long to clear up an infection or is something else wrong? I have never had an abscessed tooth before. The infection was bad in the beginning and had even spread into my neck. I am concerned and my dentist is stumped by this too, I just want to get the infection cleared up so that the tooth can be pulled, I have suffered with it for over a month. Any information you can provide would be helpful. Thank you.

earlier this week, i started getting really bad pains in the upper back right side of my mouth…. i assumed it was one of my wisdom teeth coming in… the pain was mild at first.. but then it just got worse… i tried taking extra strength Tylenol, Advil, and i went to walmart and bought some Ambesol to put on it, but nothing was helping… i tried to go to sleep that night and i did.. for only about an hour an a half! ..the pain got so horrible, it woke me up and i couldnt get back to sleep.. i started getting headaches and earaches on the right side of my face where the tooth pain was… Finally, it was about 4 in the morning and the pain was so unbearable that i went to the hospital… they told me i had a “Dental abscess” and my back tooth was cracked… they wrote me up a prescription for Penicillin and Percocet, and its been helping with the pain, but i dont know what comes next? I know i need to see my dentist.. but what do they do about abscessed teeth? …someone inform me!!

to wait to have it extracted? I have been a patient of this particular oral surgeon for four years, so I’m not walking in off the street. Shouldn’t an office have time slots for emergency visits? Why would this not be considered an emergency? I have already taken one round of antibiotics, but my tooth still hurts, the glands in my neck hurt (on the side of the abscessed tooth), and I just generally feel ill. I am completely dumbfounded that an oral surgeon’s office would actually ask someone to suffer seven weeks before having their tooth extracted. What do you think? (Please don’t state the obvious, which is that I could see someone else. There is a reason I’d like to stay with this practice if at all possible, but right now, I’m really pissed.)

I had a cavity 2 yrs ago and the dentist said he would fill it and during the procedure he exposed the nerve. He said I would need a root canal, but I had just found out I was pregnant so I decided to wait. When I finally went to the dentist they said I had an abscess and I needed a root canal but they wanted like $1000.00 and would not accept a payment plan, I went to 3 different dentists and the same thing. I’m sorry but I think that is absolutely ridiculous, most people can not walk in with a grand to take care of a tooth. Anyway 2 yrs later and now I have been feeling really sick, tired, sore neck, dizzy, headache, sinus problems, just totally not like myself, I have passed it off as lack of sleep. Then I heard you can have a stoke or the infection can spread so I went to the dentist and they put me on erythromycin and I go back on Fri for x-rays. Is it possible my infection spread and am I ok while I am on the meds should I have more tests or am I overreacting?
