I had my root canal done on Monday. It has been painful so I took painkillers but today I don’t need painkillers any more. Does that mean it’s been successful? I know some of them fail and to put my mind at rest I would like to know how would I know if it’s failed and how soon?
Also, how long can I have a temprorary filling before putting a crown on?

Almost all root canals are successful. There’s no reason why it wouldn’t be so you should definitely stop worrying. they usually hurt for about 7 days depending on the trauma caused during the procedure.
Regarding the temp filling…you shoud try not to leave temp fillings on for too long anyway as they are not as stable as permanent ones. It depends what tooth it is that you’re having crowned. If its a small front tooth then you should try to have the crown done asap because if the temp filling comes away then there may not be enough tooth left to be able to attach the crown.
If it is a back tooth then you can probably get away with leaving it a bit longer. but if you are thinking of leaving it for anything longer than a couple of months then you should probably get a permanent filling done until you are able to get the crown done.
I only know because I am about to have 4 croens done on my front lower teeth! All of which have been root canaled. Horrible experience.

Presumably your dentist took at least 1 xray at the time to check if he/she had reached the end of the root canal with the filling material? Believe me, if it had not been successful you’d still have pain. They remove the nerve and any infected material from the canal, clean it and put a special medicated dressing in it’;s place. then a temporary filling sometimes for a few weeks. If you have no further pain you can go ahead and ask the dentist to put a crown on for you if the root is strong enough to support 1. You really should have an xray to check though before spending a lot of money on a crown. Most dentists do this automatically.

it sounds like it has been successful ! usually a temp is on for 2 weeks while your crown is being made at a lab some labs take just a week!

Failed root canals could mean destruction of physiological tissue that were not supposed to be involved in part of the op.
It could also mean that not all the nerves were removed from the rooth of the tooth.
In your case, you present neither abcess nor pain, so the answer is a resounding yes to ur question.
A temporary filling can be left there for as long as necessary since its complete funtional, just not aesthetically pleasing.
