How Painful Is A Root Canal With An Alive Nerve?

Well I went to the dentist about 2 months ago and he said I needed a root canal, and then he proceeded to remove my nerve, but I can still feel pain in my tooth. Does this mean he didn’t take all of the nerves out? If so how much does a root canal hurt with an alive nerve? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Kyle
it is not normal to feel pain from a tooth that had a root canal treatment. The purpose of the treatment is to remove ALL the live tissues including the nerve from the pulp chamber and the root canals. After that you should not feel pain.
However some times the root canals are curved or have hidden branches that may left uncleaned and infected. Some times the material that fills the canals does not reach the end of a canal, and a periapical (around the root tip) abscess may develop. In this case you will have to repeat treatment.
Pain at a tooth that already had root canal is not a good sign. Visit your dentist. He will get x-rays to detect the cause of the problem. It looks like you are in the 5% of the unlucky ones who have a failed root canal treatment.
