How Long After Root Canal Can You Go Before Getting Crown?

I got a root canal last week and its almost all healed. The dentist just put putty over top of it. Do I need to go get my temporary crown as soon as possible or can I wait a while? I ask because its $670 and they want it all at once.

I wouldn’t wait, just because if you do and you eat something and for some reason the root canal breaks, you will have to have the tooth pulled, and then you will need a bridge or an implant. it’s better to fix it as soon as you can so that tooth doesn’t break or crack… it is only putty on top.

Hello, To begin with having a root canal doesn’t automatically mean that you “have” to have a crown…..Unfortunately some DDS uses the root canal as an excuse to “sell” you a crown. Unless the tooth also had a great deal of decay causing the need for a great deal of tooth “surface structure” to be removed during the Root canal procedure, a properly created filing is all that is needed to seal up the hole that was made to do the root canal through. You might need to get a second opinion about the crown…if you can find a DDS that will be straight with you about it. Good luck and I wish you well.
