Pain from cavities begin with sensitivity to sweets. As they progress and the decay goes deeper into the tooth, the pain becomes more pronounced. Pain with hot and cold items often means that the nerve is going bad. Dull aches also indicate that the nerve is going bad. In these cases, root canals and crowns are necessary to save to teeth. Extractions are your last option. Especially if you are young. You should always try to save all of your teeth. Nothing is as strong as your own natural teeth and every tooth that is removed, except wisdom teeth, needs to be replaced.
As for the broken tooth, it is very possible that it broke off due to decay, if you haven’t taken good care of your teeth.
You should see a dentist as soon as possible to get started on all of your necessary treatment.
As far as what the dental receptionist said, some of it is true, but, any person who works in the dental field should at least know how to spell the word cavity. I would be leary of taking advice from someone who can’t.

You have a cavitie when you have a lot of pain for sure. If its for a period of time. Especially when you have a broken tooth that really means your tooth is in trouble!
When you have a cavi- there are different types of pain. One stinging right down your tooth, one on the gums sorrounding the tooth, too much sensitivity to sugar, cold, and hot food/water, or one that has your face hurting up to your ear!
Now, when you have a cavitie or a tooth ache you NEED to get checked that right away.
Simply because when you dont take care of that tooth ASAP there will be no remedies to keep it because the cavities is practically touching the nerve of your tooth…the only thing to save the tooth will be a ROOT CANAL followed by a CROWN which is very expensive or go with an EXTRACTION.
**make sure you visit a dentist right away you do not want to wake up with a SWOLLEN FACE!

Ice cubes, cold water or aluminum foil cause pain when applied to the tooth.
