My eight and a half month old baby is getting his first tooth. It is just above the surface of the gum and i can feel the sharp edge to it. I wondered if the pain has stopped now that it has reached the surface or if the pain continues as the tooth comes all the way through.

As a general rule, the worst of the pain is over once the tooth edges break through the gums. When it’s just shy of breakthough though, usually the pressure has cut off the nerve supply and it’s sort of numb feeling for them. First teeth are usually the hardest, with front teeth the worst and jaw teeth not usually much problem at all. If you like, and he’ll let you, wash your hands well, and rub/press/jiggle a clean finger right on the ridges- that helps as well with the breakthrough. As does letting him chomp down of teething rings, etc. A word of caution, even after the tooth breaks through, he will still want to chomp hard with it. And those little ridges are a lot like the serrated edge on your steak knives, so watch your fingers. The best option we found for little chompers was a toddler toothbrush. Junior can chomp on either end, and work over the new teeth quite safely- and learn to brush them at the same time. Saves fingers that way, too.
