Can A Tooth That Is Broken At The Gum Line Have A Crown Attached?

My niece (13 yrs) has several teeth (molars) that have broken or rotted to the gum line. What is involved to save the teeth? If extracted, the other teeth will shift. Can a crown be attached to teeth that are not above the gum line? Any suggestions?

A crown only works well if there is some remaining tooth structure above the gumline.
If her teeth are flat to the gumline, then I would suggest root canal therapies if needed, then large amalgams secured with pins and /or posts. A crown would not add strength to the tooth, and could be a costly failure.
